Gary Marcus says ChatGPT is just a taste of GPT-4's "monster"

OpenAI is currently testing a general-purpose language model based on dialog. ChatGPT is only a preview of GPT-4, according to cognitive scientist Gary Marcus.

There have been rumors about GPT-4 floating around the web for weeks, and they all have two things in common: it is said to outperform GPT-3 and ChatGPT significantly and release relatively soon.

OpenAI runs a joint grant program with Microsoft, whose participants probably already have access to GPT-4. In 2023, Microsoft CTO Scott Stein predicted an even more significant year for artificial intelligence.

There will be a "blow to the mind" with GPT-4
According to Gary Marcus, a psychologist and cognitive scientist, several people have already tested GPT-4. Marcus, a critic of large language models, or more precisely, their handling in everyday life, assures readers that their minds will be blown.
It will "totally eclipse ChatGPT," he said. Marcus predicts that GPT-4 will offer more parameters and be trained on more data, "a significant fraction of the internet overall." "GPT-4 is going to be a monster," he writes.

Marcus assumes GPT-4 will share the same weaknesses as GPT-3 or ChatGPT when it comes to its architecture: The AI model lacks a fundamental understanding of the world, resulting in sometimes hair-raising – or, more dangerously, subtle – misstatements. According to Sam Altman, the co-founder of OpenAI, ChatGPT is not reliable enough to be used for important tasks because of its lack of reliability.
A hybrid AI system combines deep learning and preprogrammed rules is an approach Marcus advocates. In his view, scaling large language models is only one part of the solution to artificial general intelligence. A positive example of a hybrid approach is Meta's Diplomacy AI, which he expects to become increasingly popular in the coming years.

Can ChatGPT kill Google? The counterargument is here.

There is another challenge with using large language models as search engines: Who is responsible for the results? When a search engine outputs a list of web pages, the operators of the web pages are essentially responsible for the content on their page. But what if ChatGPT, a service provided by OpenAI, generated all the content
